Baltic Sea Day in Merihaka
Thursday 27 August 2026, 4–7 pm
Pannukakunpuistikko, Helsinki
Welcome to Nomaji Landscape Architects’ Baltic Sea Day in Merihaka! In the event, we’ll familiarise ourselves with the common reed (Phragmites australis) and consider its potential in improving the state of the Baltic Sea and as a circular economy material. In the reed workshop, we’ll try our hand at tying a multi-purpose reed mat and discuss the various uses of the reed material while crafting together. The program also includes a voluntary Baltic Sea Day Plunge from the Merihaka mat pier at 6 pm. The event is suitable for everyone. Pannukakunpuistikko has barrier-free access and is easy to reach – the city bike station and bus 55 stop are very close by.
Reed beds provide habitats for many species, bind nutrients and prevent erosion. However, eutrophication of the Baltic Sea shores and the reduction of shore grazing have accelerated the growth of reed beds, and in many shallow marine bays, the common reed has covered all other vegetation over large areas. The negative effects of extensive, dense reed beds on species and water bodies often outweigh the benefits. Proper reed harvesting is an environmental act that opens overgrown shore areas and increases the diversity of habitats. By mowing the reeds and collecting the reed mass, nutrients eutrophicating the Baltic Sea, especially nitrogen and phosphorus, are removed from the shores. At the same time, lost cultural landscapes are restored and recreational use is made easier. The common reed is also a valuable, renewable raw material, the utilisation of which supports circular economy. Reed can be processed into ground cover, safety platforms, bio composites and bioenergy, among other things.
Thanks to Ruokomestarit who provided the reed material and to the City of Helsinki for making the event possible. See you on Baltic Sea Day!
