The Rauma City Centre Vision 2050 was developed over the course of more than a year through close collaboration between our project team, the City of Rauma, and local residents. The vision establishes a shared direction for the development of Rauma’s city centre and its surrounding areas towards 2050. The work identified key challenges and opportunities while exploring ways to strengthen the vitality, quality of life, accessibility, identity, and long-term sustainability of the city centre.
A central objective of the project was to create the vision together with the people of Rauma. The process engaged a broad range of residents, decision-makers, businesses, and other stakeholders through workshops, interviews, online surveys, and the Future Festival. The aspirations and insights of local people formed an essential foundation for the vision, with the Kanali and Tarvontori areas emerging as key opportunities for future development.
One of the vision’s main goals is to strengthen Rauma’s maritime character and its connection to the sea. The vision explores opportunities to improve walking and cycling connections, enhance access to the waterfront, and reinforce the role of the Kanali area as an integral part of the city centre. The aim is for Rauma’s maritime identity to become more visible and more strongly felt in everyday life, the urban landscape, and future development.
A key element of the vision is the blue-green loop encircling the city centre, serving simultaneously as a recreational route, an ecological corridor, and a climate adaptation measure. The vision explores opportunities to connect green spaces into a coherent network, expand the urban tree canopy, and strengthen biodiversity. This blue-green infrastructure links parks, recreational areas, and waterfront environments while enhancing the city’s climate resilience.
The Rauma City Centre Vision 2050 is not a detailed master plan but a shared direction for the future. It is founded on the principles of regenerative urban development, a culture of experimentation, and the belief that cities evolve step by step through collaboration. The vision aims to make Rauma an even more maritime, greener, more vibrant, and climate-resilient city.
