Zeniitti located in Kempele Linnakangas, is one go Zeniitti located in Kempele Linnakangas, is one good example of what kind of new use can be developed for the former quarry area.

Nomaji was involved on drawing up the plan (in cooperation with @muuan.fi ), which will transform the area for tourism, trade, jobs and recreation. The concept of green areas is based on forest zones and the green circle bordering the zone of built activities.

Zeniitti's experiential main route varies in width and runs on the upper level of the quarry. It has integrated playgrounds, vegetation areas and commercial and sports facilities. There is also an event arena and summer theater in the area, as well as tourist accomodation.

The center of Zeniitti is a quarry filled with groundwater. To keep the water clear, the quarry will be separated from the rest of the aquatic ecosystem in the area.

The plan is that the first buildings and functions of Zeniitti tourist area will be completed in 2024.

ABANDONED LANDSCAPES OF MINING AREAS 🌿

Mining has enormous landscape effects, with little attention paid to its anticipation or aftercare. In addition to the visible landscape, the mines also have more inconspicuous effects on soil, species and water conditions.

In her studies in landscape architecture, Kaisla Rahkola became acquainted with mining from a cultural-historical perspective.

-"It has been particularly interesting to study the nature of the areas since the closure of mining. In addition to nature, mining always has an impact on local people as well. Mining is, in principle, temporary, so locals may experience both the effects of setting up a mine in their own environment and the deterioration and possible environmental damage that will result from the closure."

Although the original landscape cannot be restored, something new may emerge in the area. Carefully implemented aftercare can create new value for former mining areas, for example through new activities such as recreational use or tourism. By making sure that no environmental problems remain in the area, it can also provide a new place of interest for local people. Even as a unique environment to attract visitors from outside.

Mining is a good example of the significant consequences that producing the resources we need can have on the landscape. Many of the building materials are also based on the extractive and quarrying industries. Design can affect the nature and quality of landscape change.

NOMAJI'S RESPONSIBILITY GOALS 🌲🌸🦠 For us NOMAJI'S RESPONSIBILITY GOALS 🌲🌸🦠

For us, responsibility is a combination of social and ecological sustainability.

Ecological sustainability means that we want to promote the sustainable use of natural resources through our work. We promote the recycling of materials, mitigating and adapting to climate change, and protecting the environment. We strive to improve the ecological state of the environment and to promote awareness of the environmental impact.

Social sustainability means closeness to nature and the diversity of the environment that create the conditions for human well-being now and in the future. In our work we strive to strenghten people's connection with nature and improve recreational opportunities. High quality environment is a resource that can also increase equality between people and regions.

Responsibility begins with an orientation to the starting points of the area or project and the existing challenges. Based on them, the goals that the plan is intended to achieve are selected. The realization of the goals is assessed during the planning process and finally the change between the initial situation and the final result is examined. Visualization of the results highlights the characteristics of the area or project and the change achieved.

SUSTAINABILITY ASSESSMENT TOOLS 🌱

Sustainable landscape architecture strives to take into account ecological, socio-cultural, economic and sensory aspects at different stages of design. The aim and principles of sustainable design are to be guided by e.g. through different assessment tools.

Anna von Freymann is a landscape architect and design horticulturist whose thesis' have focused on sustainable landscape architecture. She is familiar with e.g. the American Sustainable Sites Iniative (SITES). Different perspectives on sustainability are also taken into account in Nomaji's various projects.

-"I always try to consider the sustainability aspects in my design work. The purpose is to avoid, mitigate, prevent and at best compensate for the harmful effects of construction."

The SITES certificate for sustainable environmental construction is one example of certificates that can be awarded and applied for landscape architecture projects. Certificates are one way to evaluate and steer design in a more sustainable direction, and to make projects comparable. In Finland Viherympäristöliitto's KESY-model is based on the SITES criteria, but it does not have a certification status. Experience with urban planning and buildings has been gained from the BREEAM (Building Research Establishment Environmental Assessment Method) certificate. Based on these, Nomaji has also developed the office's own set of responsible design goals.

-"A good method for a designer is to choose their own battle for each project and prioritize certain aspects of sustainability based on the starting points. Better consideration of sustainability aspects in design also often requires abandoning old ways and replacing them with new ones."

🌱 Urban farming offers many ecosystem services. 🌱 Urban farming offers many ecosystem services. It supports social cohesion, food production, learning, climate regulation and biodiversity. It also helps to re-establish a relationship with nature. Urban farming should therefore be seen as an important service in urban areas, as for example schools, kindergartens or museums.

In the Science afternoon held on wednesday we disc In the Science afternoon held on wednesday we discussed the opportunities of urban farming. Developing the network and increasing cooperation between rural and urban farming is one concrete way. Also spreading the word, inspiring people to try and involving an administrative body all play an important role in the strenghtening of urban farming.
