"I'll be starting my fifth year of landscape architecture studies at Aalto University in the fall, in addition to which I have a BSc in urban geography from the University of Helsinki. My first month at Nomaji has been everything I expected and more, with great coworkers, challenging and diverse tasks and lots of things to learn. It has been very rewarding to collaborate with professionals from other fields and getting to do a lot of independent designing on different scales. I'm excited to see what kind of new challenges I'll get back to tackle after the summer holidays!"

Happy to have you at Nomaji!☀️
In front of the Dance House Helsinki, next to the In front of the Dance House Helsinki, next to the Cable Factory, the new Kaapeliaukio square has become a popular outdoor space for moving and hanging around.

We designed Kaapeliaukio for an open space that supports the events of the area. Its roughness breathes into the industrial history of the site. Large block-surfaced natural stone boulders form spectacular structures lining the square, and preserved trees and vegetation provide shelter and softness alongside hard surfaces.

The confalt-surface and the ramped edges of the square create a stage-like space that is also well suited for skateboarding. The special lighting designed for the square creates a theatrical atmosphere for dim summer evenings.

The Dance House opened to the public at the beginning of the year and Kaapeliaukio was completed this spring. The Kaapelipuisto park is currently under construction and will be completed next fall.

LAND USE PLANNING 🌱

Land use planning can have a significant impact on the development of sustainable urban areas in the future. Annika Pousi is a landscape architect who works at Nomaji mainly in various spatial planning projects, mostly in blue-green structure. At its best, the work is effective networking and a multidisciplinary vision of the future. The challenge in planning a large area is to move from one scale to another so that the most important ideas in the different parts of the plan are retained.

-"Planning large areas always means reconciling different, sometimes conflicting aspirations, needs and goals. The whole is made up of the sum of several factors and the end result is always some kind of compromise. However, if well implemented, networking will promote more equal and responsive plans."

Perceiving the body of the plan is an important starting point for design work. When you start with a wider brush, the main things in the area become more apparent. An inherent way for Annika is to start by hand. Thus, the lines of the plan get more life and the important things come up more easily.

-"The ability to prioritize things is key in land use planning. It must be clear to the designer herself which aspects of the plan are those where there is room for flexibility. And which, in turn, are those whose transition to implementation is critical to a high-quality outcome."

The graphic elements enhance the noticebility of the summer streets and emphasize the theme "wild summer streets" in a modern way that still respects the dignity of the city center architecture.

"There is a forest in the city!" Helsinki Summer s "There is a forest in the city!" Helsinki Summer streets have opened and they bring more nature to the city.🌿

Nomaji and @swecofinland were responsible for the conception and design of this year's summer streets. Open from June to the end of August, the "wild summer streets" bring greenery, forest elements and new places to hang around to the city. The main themes of the summer streets are raising climate awareness, paying attention to children and the circular economy.

You will find the summer streets leading from Esplanadi towards the Design Museum Square.☀️☘🌸
