Nomaji defined climate-proof shoreline development guidelines for the Isosaari island in Helsinki. The challenge was to manage complex climate impacts from the perspective of land use and nature values. Preparing for climate change is even more challenging in areas where traditional means cannot be used due to ecological and economic reasons.
The study gathers information about the latest climate change research, including an analysis of shoreline variability, microclimate and existing shoreline ecosystems. Based on this analysis, a set of shoreline typologies were developed to assess the current situation and to make future predictions on the specific local impacts of climate change and land use. Exemplary land-use proposals were developed for each of the typologies, focusing on nature-based solutions.
